The Power of Words and the Power of God’s Word

I’ve heard it said that some people say so many words a day that they could fill a fifty-page book! What if every word you said for a whole day was recorded in a book and read by thousands of people. At the end of the day, would you want to go back and read the words that you spoke? Would you be embarrassed, convicted, or ashamed of the words you chose to use that day?

Our tongues are so powerful, and our words can have lasting effects. The Bible says in James 3:6 that “the tongue is a fire.” Are we using our tongues to be a light that points others to Christ or do we often use it to burn others down with hurtful words?

As Christians, God calls us to be the lights of the world. Even if your light is slowly fading and is on the verge of going out, don’t give up! It’s so easy to become discouraged in this life, but, sweet friend, never grow weary in doing well. “Keep loving, keep serving, keep listening, keep learning.” God will finish the work that He has begun in you, and He will give you strength to finish strong the race He has set before us.

If you’re a new believer just getting started in your walk with Christ, start fueling your flame by digging deeper into God’s Word and spending time in prayer every day! It takes time and lots of effort, but the joy and satisfaction that comes from spending time with our amazing God is priceless!

No matter who you are or what season you are in, the words you speak will reflect the person you are. Whatever we fill ourselves with is what will eventually come out. Are you filling yourself with God’s Word or are you constantly trying to cram God in after you’ve filled your space and time with other priorities in your life?

I fall short at putting God first every day…it’s something that I constantly have to work at, and I have to intentionally ask God to help me and correct me in that area. God corrects those He loves (Hebrews 12:6-7), and He gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

We must humble ourselves. We cannot control our tongues until God controls our hearts, and God cannot control our hearts until we have surrendered the control of our lives to Him. Does God control your life, your decisions, or your actions? Do you look to God’s Word to determine how you should live your life, or do you try to mold your lifestyle into whatever is trending on the internet? Is something or someone else controlling your life, or even pulling you away from God?

It can be hard to give God complete control over our lives, but we must remember that the reason we are here on this earth is to serve Him and Him alone. I have to remind myself daily that while God is my Savior, who loves me and forgives me every day, He is also my Lord, my Master, my Boss. God does not want control over our lives to be mean or unfair…not at all! It’s simply because He loves us.

He knows and wants what is best for us, and if we give Him control, He can help us become the person that He created us to be. Isn’t it so cool and reassuring to know that our lives rest in the hands of our Creator who called us by name before we were even born? We can trust that God sees the big picture of our lives and wants to use us.

All we have to do is humbly fall at His feet in full realization of who He is and who we are! We are hopeless sinners and He is our hope! We are flawed, but He gave us worth and life through the greatest act of love on the cross. He gave us grace when we were so undeserving.

So, while our words are capable of big things…good or bad, God is bigger! He can take our words and use them for His glory! When our words are paired with God’s Word, God can do big and mighty things to point others to Him!

Sharing the Gospel and speaking boldly about our faith is often easier said than done. It can be overwhelming and even a little intimidating. But Jesus gave us a reassuring pep talk in Matthew 10:19-20. He said, “…take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”

So, if we have been spending time with God and are filled by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18), God will give us the words to speak when the time comes for us to share our faith. This is one reason why it is so important to study God’s Word and know why we believe what we believe.

1 Peter 3:15 says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”

To be filled with the Spirit is to be so consumed with it that it controls you. Fill yourself with the Holy Spirit! Whenever you begin to speak, think of the verse Psalm 35:28. It says, “And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.”

I pray that this encourages you and challenges you to set your mind on the things of Christ so that when you speak your mind, the words you say will glorify God!
